SailFreeGPS is a GPS navigation app for motorboats and sailboats. It helps monitor position, course, speed, distance traveled, and useful information while sailing, performing a Man Overboard maneuver, participating in a regatta, or setting a destination waypoint.
Position, course, and speed monitoring
SailFreeGPS displays the current location, course over ground (COG), speed over ground (SOG), maximum speed, trip distance, average speed, and magnetic compass. GPS information can be filtered using the average of a selected number of recent measurements. The number of measurements can be configured to help produce a more stable data display.
COG and SOG history is available for up to six hours, allowing changes in course and speed to be observed, including the effect of sail trim. The app can also share position, COG, and SOG with friends. Track data is displayed on Google Maps for up to 48 hours, while tracks can be saved or loaded using GPX and KML files.
Emergency maneuvers and destination waypoint management
The Man Overboard (MOB) feature saves the location of a person who has fallen overboard and provides directions for returning to that point. This feature also provides the MOB relative bearing and tack angle.
SailFreeGPS supports saving up to eight waypoints and provides a GOTO function with ETA calculations, or estimated time of arrival. The waypoint feature can display the relative bearing and tack angle. The app can also calculate distance and heading, while anchor and course alarms can be enabled as needed for navigation.
Regatta and anchor alarm features
For regatta activities, a countdown timer and starting-line information are available. The “Gun” button can round the seconds to the nearest minute, for example, changing 4:03 to 4:00 or 3:58 to 4:00. An exact start time down to the second can also be entered.
The regatta feature displays the estimated time to save or make up if continuing on the same course, taking speed and course into account. The app also calculates the ideal speed for crossing the line at 0:00 while maintaining the same course. For the anchor alarm, the anchor area can be created as a polygon and its shape can be adjusted.
Map display and navigation settings
The map tab can display SOG and COG, while track segments are shown based on speed. Users can select the Hybrid map and set the duration used to calculate the track speed scale: the last five minutes, the last 15 minutes, or the entire track. The tack angle value displayed on the MOB and waypoint tabs can also be selected.
Several controls are available through specific touch gestures: double-clicking SPEED resets trip data, maximum speed, and average speed; long-pressing COURSE displays the compass; while double-clicking the coordinates shows or hides the position. COG, MOB, and waypoint graphs can be enlarged to full-screen mode. When exiting, the app can ask the user to save the track first. SailFreeGPS uses a foreground service to obtain the location.
